A Bergen County, NJ skylight contractor can install a skylight on your retail, industrial, or office building to provide you with more natural light and to reduce your organization’s utility bills. The increase in sunlight also helps you maintain a more pleasant environment and boost employee productivity.

However, to enjoy the many benefits of a skylight, you need to maintain it properly. This does not take a lot of work, but weekly or monthly attention is important. It keeps the skylight in good condition, boosts the amount of light it admits, and minimizes the need for you to contact a skylight contractor for repairs.

If your commercial building features one or more skylights on the roof, read below to learn what you need to do to repair and maintain it.

Dust Your Bergen County, NJ Skylight Weekly

If your building features a flat roof to which you have access, dust the skylight’s exterior every week, if possible. Otherwise, the glass will attract dust, pollen, leaves, and other debris that will inhibit sunlight entry. If your business features a sloped roof, dust the skylight exterior only if you can do so safely and without risk of falling.

Otherwise, hire a professional to dust and clean the outside glass. If you can do it yourself, acquire a feather duster or a microfiber whisk to clean away debris. The more frequently you can do this, the easier the debris will be to remove, and the less often you must clean more thoroughly.

You should also dust the inside of the skylight occasionally, as well. Dust won’t settle on the ceiling due to gravity because it is in the ceiling. However, the interior glass may contain a tiny electrostatic charge that attracts dust particles from the surrounding air. The skylight may develop a tiny sheen of dust that must be cleaned every few weeks.

Clean Glass On Your Roof Skylight Often

Although dusting regularly will prevent buildup on the glass, it will not keep your skylight completely clean. You should wash away dust and grime with warm, soapy water and mild detergent every month or so. Again, if you cannot do this safely or fear heights, hire a skylight contractor to clean the outside of the glass.

To clean it yourself, use a bucket of warm water from a sink. Add a tablespoon of a mild detergent—such as dish soap or glass cleaner—and scrub away the dirt and grime from the outside of the glass. Use a clean sponge or wash rag to remove set-on dirt and any debris that dusting cannot remove.

Rinse with clean water and dry with a clean towel. A microfiber cloth is a good choice because it will not leave lint. These are also very absorbent and do not leave streaks on the glass. They last for hundreds of washes and are very effective at removing bacteria from smooth surfaces. This will keep spots from reforming quickly.

Clean The Flashings Of Your Skylight Windows

The flashings are the protective metal layer around the edges of a skylight, chimney, vent, or other roof penetration. When washing the glass of your skylight, be sure to clean the flashings, as well.

Again, use a clean sponge and water with a mild detergent. Rinse with clean water, and be sure to dry thoroughly with a clean microfiber towel.

Hire A Dependable Skylight Contractor

For additional maintenance and skylight repairs, hire a proven skylight contractor from the North Jersey area. This professional will make necessary repairs, clean the outside when necessary, and inspect your skylight for leaks, cracks, drafts, or other problems. They will repair bent flashings, seal cracks, and add caulk where it has turned brittle.

They can also inspect your roof to see where you might affordably add one or more additional skylights. These could brighten your building, further reduce your need for artificial light, and boost the productivity of your workers. More skylights could also improve working conditions, boost employee health, and further reduce insurance costs.
