If your building features a flat roof to which you have access, dust the skylight’s exterior every week, if possible. You should wash away dust and grime with warm, soapy water and mild detergent every month or so. Again, if you cannot do this safely or fear heights, hire a skylight contractor to clean the outside of the glass.

To clean it yourself, use a bucket of warm water from a sink. Add a tablespoon of a mild detergent—such as dish soap or glass cleaner—and scrub away the dirt and grime from the outside of the glass. Use a clean sponge or wash rag to remove set-on dirt and any debris that dusting cannot remove.

Rinse with clean water and dry with a clean towel. A microfiber cloth is a good choice because it will not leave lint. These are also very absorbent and do not leave streaks on the glass. They last for hundreds of washes and are very effective at removing bacteria from smooth surfaces. This will keep spots from reforming quickly.

Clean The Flashings Of Your Skylight Windows

The flashings are the protective metal layer around the edges of a skylight, chimney, vent, or other roof penetration. When washing the glass of your skylight, be sure to clean the flashings, as well.

Again, use a clean sponge and water with a mild detergent. Rinse with clean water, and be sure to dry thoroughly with a clean microfiber towel.
